FINANCE ASSISTANT
The ARC-Vegetable, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC– VIMP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat (Pretoria):
FINANCE ASSISTANT
Key Performance Areas:
- Compile and evaluate the performance report of each project,
- Prepare financial reports and proof of income reports to the funder,
- Ensure that audit queries attended to and resolve as soon as possible,
- Preparation and posting of journals.
- Prepare General ledger reconciliations on a monthly basis.
- Manage all externally funded projects to avoid operational losses and report losses to the Institute Finance Manager,
- Strong Excel skills essential,
- Prepare and submit project budgets,
- Ability to work in a team and independently,
- Ability to work accurately under pressure and to deadlines,
- Assist project managers with budget revisions,
- Preferable knowledge of AX,
- Invoicing external customers,
- Follow up on outstanding debtors,
- Proficiency in the MS Office suite.
Requirements:
- Must have NQF Level 6 in Accounting/ Cost & Management Accounting/ Management Accounting or any relevant qualification,
- Three years’ experience in Senior accounting role,

RESEARCHER (PLANT BREEDING) X2 ARC-GC
Key Performance Areas:
- Initiate, coordinate, and manages projects,
- Coordinates project plan with the Research Team Manager,
- Manages people within projects and ensures optimal utilisation,
- Compiles and manages project budgets,
- Plans and co-ordinates technical projects,
- Manages project facilities, materials, and equipment,
- Ensures optimal utilization of resources,
- Strategic planning of future resources,
- Independently conducts specialist research/technical support, diagnostics, and other services across projects,
- Manages and ensures compliance to quality standards
- Render expert diagnostic, technical and other services and consults at a national /international level,
- Exploits intellectual property developments and assist in its development,
- Identifies and pursues new business opportunities,
- Meet peer norm requirements for specific field of expertise, by recognising authorship or contributions,
- Magnitude of measurable outcomes,
- Ensures compliance with SHE/OHS policies and procedures,
- Develops technical capacity at an appropriate level,
- Identifies and participates in own learning opportunities and learning of sub-ordinates
Requirements:
- PhD in Plant Breeding / Molecular Breeding / Genetics with Plant Breeding as a Major,
- Alternatively MSc in Plant Breeding / Molecular Breeding / Genetics with Plant Breeding as a major plus minimum three (3) years post-qualification experience and three (3) relevant peer reviewed publications, or alternatively one (1) released cultivar in lieu of each publication,
- Valid driver’s license

- Molecular diagnostics,
- Research support in diagnostic assay development for molecular and serological tests,
- Research support in tick colony maintenance and tick research.
Requirements:
- BSc (Hons) or MSc degree in Biological Sciences/MTech Veterinary Technology,
- Three years relevant experience post-degree,
- SAVC registration,
- Evidence of peer-reviewed publications (minimum of 1).

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMIST
Key Performance Areas:
- Provide expertise for quality research and analysis in the field of agricultural economics, including macroeconomic development, impact of R&D on socio-economic development, economics of agricultural technology policy;
- Provide strategic advice with respect to economic trends and implications on ARC business;
- Evaluate the viability of research programmes of the ARC, to support investment decisions and determine the impact of the ARC’s research and technology transfer effort;
- Contribute to positioning the Economic Analysis Unit of the ARC as a Centre of excellence in research;
- Drive conceptualisation and implementation of multidisciplinary research projects and scaling of research for impact across the ARC;
- Mobilise internal and external funding for research projects;
- Contribute to student supervision, mentoring and peer-support of colleagues;
- Publish research in accredited peer reviewed journals.
Requirements:
- A PhD degree in Agricultural Economics or a relevant field;
- 3-5 years’ relevant postgraduate work experience (can be before or after the PhD);
- Proven capabilities for quantitative data analysis and competency with at least two of SPSS, Stata and EViews;
- Evidence of ability to publish in agricultural economics or related fields of research (at least 3 publications);
- Sound understanding of the priorities and challenges facing the agricultural sector in South Africa;
- Ability to build and manage relationships with other researchers, as well as a wide range of stakeholders outside ARC;
- A valid code EC1 Driver’s Licence.

JUNIOR RESEARCHER: (IRRIGATION & AGRICULTURAL INFRASTRUCTURE)
Salary: (R322 814 – R484 217 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
- To render research in a team context or individually under guidance,
- Effective handling of personnel regarding utilization, training and evaluation as well as maintaining good working relations within the team,
- Good planning and management of research activities, including aspects such as effective use of facilities and resources, problem solving and liaison with experts,
- Proper management of budgets in compliance with financial policies/procedures always to ensure that the budgets are managed in a cost-effective and proactive manner,
- To ensure successful completion of research projects in compliance with set standards,
- Compliance with Occupational Health & Safety regulations and procedures,
- To successfully market and promote Agricultural Engineering services/products to relevant role-players,
- Involvement in campus activities such as research committees, section meetings and seminars,
Requirements:
- MSc in Agricultural Engineering or equivalent with emphasis on Agricultural Infrastructure or Irrigation and Drainage Engineering,
- Two (2) years’ research experience and technical background in advanced engineering technologies applied to agricultural problems,
- Track record of competitive fund raising for research will be an added advantage,
- Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) will be an added advantage,
- Good communication skills (written and verbal),
- Valid driver’s licence (code 08/EB).
