Phlebotomist

Main purpose of the job: To perform venepuncture on individuals participating in research trials and
studies participants.
Location: Wits RHI -7 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Research Centre. On the 3rd,4th, and 5th Floor.

Key performance areas
Prepare study participants’ kits in accordance with the protocol schedule.
Order and maintain consumables/stock and check expiry dates.
Ensure that all participants are correctly identified and information on sample kits corresponds with participant details.
Draw blood and maintain order of blood draw at all times through preparation of the tubes in correct order.
Perform rapid BHCG test for participants, record appropriately and monitor internal/parallel and external quality control (QC).
Perform Rapid HIV test for participants, record appropriately and monitor internal/parallel and external QC.
Perform urinalysis, record appropriately and monitor internal/parallel and external QC as per unit SOPs.
Centrifuge and store samples as per specific study requirements.
If required, monitor room temperature to ensure that kits and test reagents are kept within the acceptable temperature ranges.
If required, monitor fridge/ freezer and room temperature daily and report out of ranges.
Follow – up participant’s results and ensure results delivery to appropriate clinic staff.
Ensure shipment of specimens timeously and per correct temperature.
Assist site staff with maintaining kit levels for relevant studies.
Maintain hand washing techniques before and after each participant.
Maintain universal precautions- wear protective clothing & no resheathing of needles.
Adherence to medical waste disposal.
Active participation and attendance in meetings.
Draft daily, weekly, or monthly updates as needed.
Assist other cadres of staff where required and applicable.
Perform duties per delegation of authority log.
Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management.
Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained.
Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback.
Take ownership for driving own career development in attending training and development sessions and
relevant meetings.
Comply with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Protocol requirements and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Verify accuracy of data in source documentation and accuracy of transcription from source data to Case
Report Forms (CRF) as needed.
Ensure errors on source documents e.g., CRF’s are corrected, initialed, and dated (as needed).
Support the timely transmission/data faxing of relevant Case Report Forms following QC activity (as needed).
Ensure completion of corrective action of internal and external QC reports and monitoring reviews
Assist with staff training (and retraining) where error trends are identified
Required minimum education and training.
Profession- Phlebotomy Technician.
Required minimum work experience.
One year of work experience in phlebotomy environment.
