RESEARCH ASSISTANT, AGRONOMY (SHARED SERVICES)


The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.

Key Performance Areas:
 Maintain the general appearance of field trial sites,
 Provide research support, diagnostics, and other services,
 Adhere to work plans and provides verbal feedback on work activities to the supervisor,
 Manage allocated facilities, fields, materials, and equipment and ensure optimal utilisation of resources.
 Identify the need for human resources in projects and manage the allocated resources.

Requirements
 Grade 12 with 3 years’ experience or Grade 10 with 10 years of relevant experience in Agronomy or a related
field,
 Basic understanding of weed control, soil cultivation methods, fertilisation, spraying for disease and pest
control, irrigation systems (installation, operation, and maintenance), and sustainable field management
 Ability to solve problems, organise, and work without direct supervision,
 Experience and demonstrable knowledge in vegetable and/or medicinal plant production,
 Practical skills, such as small repairs on irrigation systems, tools, and implements, will be an added
advantage.
 Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety aspects,
 A valid drivers’ license.
