CHIEF TECHNICAL OFFICER


(Payclass 10) Department of Geological Science Faculty of Science

The Department of Geological Sciences invites applications for a Chief Technical Officer position to be responsible for its vehicle
pool, provide maintenance and repair support for analytical instrumentation and laboratory infrastructure in the Geological
Sciences building and fabricate teaching and research equipment.

Requirements for the job:

  • A N6 National Technical Certificate, BTech or equivalent, and 5-years’ experience following recognised apprenticeship (or
    7 years total relevant experience) in machining, toolmaking, plumbing/pipefitting or maintaining analytical equipment
    instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with operation of lathe and milling machines, as well as ability to weld.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the operation and repair of vacuum pumps and similar powered mechanical devices.
  • Driver’s licence (Code B)
  • Broad knowledge of vehicle operation, maintenance and repair.
  • Initiative, independence, ability to problem-solve, and good interpersonal skills.

Basic knowledge of fault finding in electrical equipment will be an advantage.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and manage pool of 5 vehicles (bakkies, Kombi) plus trailers and administer usage by Departmental and UCT
    staff.
  • Share management of workshop with Principal Technical Officer.
  • Maintenance and mechanical repair of scientific instruments and related infrastructure.
  • Design and fabrication of teaching and research equipment as required by academic and research staff.
  • Liaise with UCT Maintenance and Properties & Services and contractors, regarding upkeep and renovation of the
    Geological Sciences Building.
  • Maintenance of physical infrastructure (e.g., water supply, hot water geysers) at Laingsburg Field Station
  • Act as Fire and Safety Officer for Geological Sciences Building

The annual cost of employment for 2023, including benefits (where applicable), is between R580 137 and R682 513
