Role summary
The incumbent will be responsible for the provision of medication and supplementary services to patients and members of the healthcare team. The Pharmacist will also assume responsibility for meeting patients’ needs in a responsible, satisfactory and cost-effective manner. High emphasis will be placed on quality and
efficient medicine management. The candidate must be willing to work flexible hours to accommodate the operational requirements of the hospital.
Key work output and accountabilities
- Dispensing of prescriptions (hospital and retail)
- Ensure maximum safety of patients by providing advice on the appropriate selection, dosage and
drug interaction, potential side effects and therapeutic effects of medicines. - Act as custodian for the management of schedule 5 & 6 drugs as per legal requirements
- Record prescriptions as per legislative requirements.
- Supervise and control the acquisition, storage, dispensing, handling and packaging of medicines to
ensure safety and quality. - Assist with all aspects of ethical stock control including, reordering of stock, maintaining dedicated
stock areas for organisation and expiry dates. - Conduct cyclical and full stock takes
- Comply to regulations as set out by the SA Pharmacy Council
- Promote Medication Safety and Medication Information to all patients and departments
- Active participation in the Antibiotic Stewardship programme
- Maintain and sustain effective working relationships with all medical and allied medical staff.
- Build relationships with wards to facilitate the understanding and updating of Pharmacy systems
and policies. - Training and supervising pharmacist assistants
- Willing to work flexible hours as required
- Assist in overtime when necessary
- Participate with colleagues on a rotational basis in the provision of an after hour on call service for
all medication related issues.
Education
- A relevant pharmaceutical qualification (B Pharm Degree)
- Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council
Work experience
- Work experience in a Hospital or Retail Pharmacy environment
- Advanced Computer literacy (SAP, CareOn & Unisolve) will be advantageous)
Knowledge
- Good general knowledge and understanding of legislation pertaining to the specific business environment.
